Mr Wharton graduated from St Thomas Hospital Medical School, London.

Subsequent training occurred at St Georges Hospital, London before spending two years researching the biological activity of colorectal cancer, which led to Master of Surgery degree.

Higher surgical training was based at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London. In addition one year was spent at the Royal Marsden Hospital specialising in cancer surgery.

Before becoming a consultant, he underwent a years specialist colorectal training at St Mark's Hospital, London.

Lately he has led the new development of the colorectal service at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital.
