    Background Information
    Professional profile:

A graduate of Leicester University Medical School, Mr Philpott completed his basic surgical training in the University Hospitals of Leicester before undertaking a period of research into developing apparatus for testing the sense of smell. His specialist training was completed in East Anglia, during which time he spent a year at the St Paul’s Sinus Centre in Vancouver, Canada learning advanced skills in endoscopic sinus surgery for inflammatory diseases of the nose and sinuses as well as tumours of the sinuses and anterior skull base. His main clinical interests include the medical and surgical treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis, allergic fungal rhinosinusitis and other sino-nasal disorders, as well as addressing functional and cosmetic aspects of the nose through rhinoplasty.

Mr Philpott also spent time at the Dresden University Smell & Taste Clinic learning techniques for assessing and researching the sense of smell. As a newly appointed Senior Lecturer at the University of East Anglia, he will be responsible for leading research into disorders of the Ear, Nose and Throat as well as educating trainee doctors in the specialty. One of his primary objectives will be to establish a centre for the treatment and research of smell and taste disorders, as there is currently no national centre in existence.

Mr Philpott is the course organiser for the East Anglian Course on the Management of Sinonasal Disease in the 21st Century and is an invited instructor and speaker at other sinus surgery courses and meetings. He has recently undertaken humanitarian work in Kampala, Uganda training African surgeons how to use minimal access surgery to treat nose and sinus diseases.

    Personal profile:

Mr Philpott is married with 3 children; his wife is a General Practitioner in Suffolk. His interests include foreign travel, tennis, golf and skiing, the latter having benefitted greatly from a year living in Canada – the Whistler Bowl is a must for any hardened skier! A love of Formula One, European history and developing his culinary skills help occupy some spare time too.
