Mr Wael Ismail is a consultant breast surgeon whose private practice is based primarily at Spire Hartswood private hospital in Brentwood, Essex.
Private breast surgery
Wael Ismail operates on more than 200 women with breast cancer every year He aims to deliver high quality breast care and excellent results to both his private and NHS patients. His breast service is built on a strong multidisciplinary ethos and follows all guidelines and evidence-based protocols for breast cancer treatment.
Mr Ismail is also an accredited breast screening surgeon and operates on women who have no breast symptoms and whoser cancer has been detected during routine mammography screening. For these patients, Mr Ismail uses the wire localisation technique to confirm diagnosis and plan treatment.
In addition to the wire localisation technique, Mr Ismail offers the following surgical treatments at Spire Hartswood Hospital :
- wide local excision of breast lump
- mastectomy
- skin sparing mastectomy
- mastectomy with immediate breast reconstruction performed in conjunction with a specialist plastic surgeon. Reconstruction options include implants, implant plus latissimus dorsi (LD) flap, and deep inferior epigastric pedicle (DIEP) flap as appropriate.
- blue dye sentinel node biopsy (SLNB) to determine spread of cancer to the lymph system, with minimum lymph node removal
- axillary clearance of lymph nodes
Patients coming to see Mr Ismail with breast symptoms can have same-day investigations (mammography, breast ultrasound and biopsy) on Mondays and Wednesdays, with results either available on the same day or two days later. Spire Hartswood Hospital’s specialist breast care nurses support all private patients and treatment planning is done by a multi-disciplinary team including surgeon, oncologist, radiologist and pathologist before and after surgery.
Hernia surgery
Wael Ismail’s secondary surgical interest and experience is in the field of hernia surgery. He pioneered the day-case UHS (UltraproTM hernia system) open hernia repair technique and hernia repair under local anaesthetic. Mr Ismail is also experienced in the treatment of large incisional hernias occurring near or directly along a prior abdominal surgical incision. He has published widely in this field and trains other surgeons in these techniques.
Paediatric surgery
Mr Ismail’s private general surgery practice includes routine surgery for children. At Spire Hartswood Hospital he carries out procedures such as hernia repair, circumcision and orchidopexy (surgery for undescended testicles) for children aged three years and over.
