Background Information
Professional profile:

Mr Shiv Bhanot is a consultant urological surgeon at Spire Hartswood private hospital in Brentwood, Essex and Spire Roding Hospital in Redbridge, Essex offering private urology surgery in our clean and comfortable private hospitals.

Shiv Bhanot has held the post of Consultant Urological Surgeon within Barking, Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust since 1995. He is the lead surgeon and trainer in laparoscopic urological surgery at his NHS Trust and is currently training several urology consultants and fellows in advanced laparoscopic surgical techniques.

Shiv Bhanot introduced the laparoscopic (keyhole) prostatectomy procedure in Essex in 2005 and has carried out more than 300 laparoscopic prostatectomy operations. This procedure is now routinely offered to all newly diagnosed patients with early prostate cancer. For patients, the benefits of laparoscopic prostatectomy are minimal pain and blood loss, quicker recovery and excellent functional and cancer outcome. In addition, Mr Bhanot uses a "nerve sparing" technique to preserve potency in younger men with early prostate cancer.

Patients opting for laparoscopic radical prostatectomy at Spire Hartswood Hospital or Spire Roding Hospital can expect to stay in hospital for 2-3 nights, compared to 5-7 days for open surgery. Recovery time is 2-3 weeks against 2-3 months for open radical prostatectomy.

In 2008 Shiv Bhanot performed the first laparoscopic Millin’s prostatectomy. In 2009 his team of surgeons pioneered the "Single one centimetre port laparoscopic radical prostatectomy". This operation is even less invasive than a standard laparoscopic radical prostatectomy or robotic prostatectomy. The details of this operation were published in the British Journal of Urology International (BJUI) as a surgical atlas.

Shiv Bhanot is an honorary lecturer at the Institute of Urology, London. He is also on the panel of the national cancer peer review group. He regularly reviews research papers submitted to the Gold Journal of Urology and is himself credited with several original research papers. His contributions to urological services over the years have included application of various forms of energy including radio-frequency, microwaves and lasers to prostatic enlargement, working on basic science potential of clinical research, leading improvements in diagnostic methods and surgical techniques, setting up of one stop diagnostic services.

Mr Bhanot has been honoured as a visiting Professor by several universities for his work in the Middle East, USA and China. He is currently the UK delegate for the Societe Internationale d'Urologie.

Personal profile:
Mr Bhanot has been involved in several community groups and activities. These include his team and family's successful climb in adverse winter conditions to the summit of Ben Nevis in March 2006 in aid of APPLE (Association of Prostate Patients in London and Essex). The money raised has been used to set up keyhole surgery at King George's Hospital.

Mr Bhanot is married with two children and lives in Essex. His interests include reading, mountain walking and cricket.
