Fellow Royal College of Physicians Secretary to the Clinical Services and Standards Committee of the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) Guidelines editor of ‘Gut’ Chairman of the Independent Practice Committee of the BSG
Whilst at St Thomas’ Hospital I completed my MD thesis on inflammatory bowel disease before completing my training at UCH and the Whittington Hospital, North London. Previously, I was fortunate enough to be awarded by the British Society of Gastroenterology a travelling fellowship to the gastrointestinal unit of the Medical University of South Carolina; this was a valuable learning experience.I am a highly experienced gastroenterologist practising in Hertfordshire and treat a wide range of conditions affecting the gut. Typical conditions that I treat include all forms of indigestion, all types of bowel problems including constipation and diarrhoea and pancreas/bile duct problems. I am a skilled endoscopist practising all forms of endoscopy including gastroscopy, colonoscopy and ERCP. When meeting a new patient my philosophy is to take a detailed history of your problems and in particular to focus on any areas of diet that might be influencing your symptoms. If required I may undertake a gastroscopy/colonoscopy but I believe that this is only a small part of the treatment process and that it is important to take a holistic view when treating someone with gut symptoms. Apart from medication, dietary advice plays an important part of my treatment strategy. I have published widely on topics such as colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, constipation and endoscopy.
I moved from North London to the rural delights of Hertfordshire in 1997. I enjoy swimming with my club on a Saturday morning and then need the rest of the weekend to recover! I am a keen golfer but fortunately will never have to make a living out of it. I enjoy the films of Martin Scorsese, the books of John Irving, the wickets of Jimmy Anderson and the goals of DD (he will remain unidentified!)
