What is neck lift (platysmaplasty) surgery?

If you are unhappy with the appearance of the skin around your neck and jaw area you may want to consider undergoing a neck lift procedure. A neck lift is a form of cosmetic surgery which can reshape the skin around the neck and jaw, reducing the appearance of sagging and other visible signs of ageing.

What are the benefits of a neck lift?

The neck is often where the effects of ageing first begin to show. As skin loses elasticity it can begin to sag, resulting in the appearance of vertical bands, lines and wrinkles. Also, if you lose a lot of weight you may be left with excess skin under the chin and around the neck area. Cosmetic surgery to the neck can lift and improve the appearance of the skin, resulting in a more youthful and refreshed look.

What happens during the neck lift operation?

Neck lift surgery involves the removal of excess skin and fatty tissue, leaving the skin around the area of the neck and jaw smoother and more defined. During surgery loose or sagging skin is removed or tightened. Fatty tissue may be removed with liposuction. Vertical bands and lines can be eliminated using platysmaplasty; a procedure which involves making small incisions under the chin or behind the ears to tighten the muscles of the neck.

A neck lift is sometimes performed in conjunction with a facelift. Alternatively, neck lift surgery, rather than a full facelift, may be sufficient to achieve the results you desire. As with any other cosmetic procedure, your expectations should be realistic. The results of neck lift surgery will depend on the elasticity of your skin and to what degree it has been affected by sun damage.

The neck lift procedure is usually performed under general anaesthetic and may involve an overnight stay in hospital.

Recovery following neck lift surgery

After neck lift surgery you will experience some bruising and swelling, which should usually diminish within 14 days. You may also experience feelings of burning, tightness, pulling and numbness. This is normal in the first few weeks and should resolve naturally. You should be able to return to work within one to two weeks, but should refrain from strenuous activity for around three weeks. Full recovery can take about a month.
