Keith Martin’s research work is focused on the mechanisms of visual loss in glaucoma and the development of new treatment approaches. In his laboratory at the Cambridge University Centre for Brain Repair, he is currently developing gene therapy and stem cell techniques to try to prevent visual loss due to glaucoma and ultimately to restore vision in those blind due to the disease.

Keith Martin qualified from Oxford University Clinical School in 1993 and trained in general medicine and neurology at Hammersmith Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology in London and the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

Professor Martin's Higher Specialist Training in Ophthalmology was undertaken at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge and in Norwich. He completed three years of advanced sub-specialty fellowship training in the medical and surgical management of adult and paediatric glaucoma at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA (with Professor Harry Quigley) and at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London (with Professor Peng Khaw).

 Keith Martin was elected as the first Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Cambridge in 2010 and he runs an active research programme at the Centre for Brain Repair, developing new treatments for glaucoma. In 2010, Professor Martin was presented with the ARVO Foundation for Eye Research / Carl Camras Translational Research Award. This International Award is given to a researcher from any country under the age of 50 years whose research is judged to have the greatest potential to lead to major breakthroughs in the treatment of eye disease.

Clinically, Professor Martin has a special interest in the management of severe, advanced and complex glaucoma.

He is the Basic Science Editor of the Journal of Glaucoma and the Treasurer of the World Glaucoma Association, the largest organisation in the world dedicated to improving the treatment of glaucoma, the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide.

 

Personal profile:

Keith Martin is married with three young kids and combines a busy clinical and research career with a variety of other interests. He is a keen pianist and tennis player and still occasionally finds time to windsurf, albeit rather badly.
