Background Information
Professional profile:
I am a specialist colorectal surgeon. I have a particular interest in the modern treatment of haemorrhoids, including haemorrhoidal artery ligation or THD. This is a minimally invasive technique which is associated with minimal post-operative discomfort and a fast return to normal activities, as it avoids painful cuts on the outside.
I am a fully trained surgeon in the use of laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery for the treatment of colorectal (bowel) cancer, diverticular disease and inflammatory bowel disease, having learnt these techniques in specialist units in the south west of England and the University of Toronto, Canada. Laparoscopic surgery has the advantages of smaller scars, less pain, a quicker recovery with less time in hospital and a faster return to normal activities/work. In addition, I treat all colorectal conditions, including haemorrhoids, fissures, fistulas, incontinence, prolapse and anal skin tags. I treat patients with rectal bleeding, and regularly perform colonoscopy.
In terms of general surgery, my practice is intentionally limited to the treatment of groin (inguinal) and abdominal wall hernias.

I have published over 50 research articles and book chapters (including publications in prestigious journals such as the Lancet and Nature Reviews Cancer) . In addition, I have been awarded several research prizes (including the Patey Prize and John of Arderne Medal) and travelling fellowships.
Personal profile:
My spare time is mainly spent with my wife and 2 sons. I maintain a keen interest in rugby union, having previously represented Cambridge University for many years, culminating in playing scrum-half for the winning Blues side in the 1994 Varsity Match at Twickenham.
