Investigation of nerve and muscle disorders, and epilepsies
At Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital I specialise in the assessment of nerve and muscle disease, including tingly fingers, neuropathies, nerve root disorders and primary muscle or neuromuscular junction disorders. These are investigated with EMG and nerve conduction (EEG and all other neurophysiological investigations available privately via Addenbrooke’s).
I have a PhD, and continue research interests in the objective measurement of abnormal movements in neurodegenerative disease. Other research activity includes disease of peripheral nerve and muscle, and also epilepsies.

I qualified from Cambridge then Oxford University medical schools, and undertook neurology and subsequently clinical neurophysiology training in Newcastle followed by Queen Square (London) and Sydney. At Addenbrooke’s I lead the Clinical Neurophysiology service, where we investigate diseases of peripheral nerve and muscle as well as interpret tests of the brain to investigate suspected epileptic seizures.
At Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital I provide a full neuromuscular service using EMG and nerve conduction studies (no EEG or other specialist tests – they are available privately via Addenbrooke’s). I commonly investigate patients with problems such as tingly or numb fingers, sciatica or other nerve root symptoms, and weakness suspected to be caused by nerve or muscle problems. I regularly perform tests to help diagnose rare diseases of the nerves and muscles.
I am always happy to explain the tests I perform since they are unfamiliar to most patients and many doctors too. By understanding the investigation you will appreciate its role in diagnosis and how it helps inform decisions about treatment.
I am married with 3 children that keep me pretty busy.
