Linear shockwave therapy (LSWT) is a new non-invasive therapy that takes advantage of the low-intensity shock waves’ ability to create new blood vessels which therefore improves penile blood flow.

Why you might need it

LSWT is a new non-invasive therapy that takes advantage of the low-intensity shock waves’ ability to create new blood vessels which therefore improves penile blood flow.  This controlled increase in blood flow causes an improved erection.

The advantages of LSWT are:

  • Full organ coverage for improved effectiveness
  • Shorter treatment protocol – four treatment sessions lasting about 20 minutes each
  • Hands free treatment
  • Non-invasive
  • Pain-free

The device, known as Renova, is the first of its kind. Renova studies have shown an 80% success rate for people who had previously been taking PDE5 inhibitors such as Viagra.

Who will do it?

Our patients are at the heart of what we do and we want you to be in control of your care. To us, that means you can choose the consultant you want to see, and when you want. They'll be with you every step of the way.

All of our consultants are of the highest calibre and benefit from working in our modern, well-equipped hospitals.

Our consultants have high standards to meet, often holding specialist NHS posts and delivering expertise in complex sub-speciality surgeries. Many of our consultants have international reputations for their research in their specialised field.

Before your treatment

You will have a formal consultation with a healthcare professional. During this time you will be able to explain your medical history, symptoms and raise any concerns that you might have.

We will also discuss with you whether any further diagnostic tests, such as scans or blood tests, are needed. Any additional costs will be discussed before further tests are carried out.

Preparing for your treatment

We've tried to make your experience with us as easy and relaxed as possible.

For more information on visiting hours, our food, what to pack if you're staying with us, parking and all those other important practicalities, please visit our patient information pages.

Our dedicated team will also give you tailored advice to follow in the run up to your visit.

The procedure

The device produces a shockwave with a probe, which is held by the clinician and delivers the low intensity shockwave to the smooth muscle in the penis. As the focused shockwaves pass through the skin and into the tissue they cause an effect within.

The low intensity shock waves result in new blood vessel generation (neovascularisation) which increases the blood flow to the penis when gaining an erection. Studies have shown that this treatment appears to rehabilitate the tissue within the penis leading to an improvement in erectile function.

Many patients report an improvement within a few weeks however, even though there is an improvement, it is important to complete a full course of treatment. Clinical studies have now shown that men who are unable to take oral treatments for erectile dysfunction or who do not respond to oral treatments can regain their erections or maintain harder erections following low intensity shock wave treatment.
