Research and publications

In addition to my clinical specialisation, research is an integral part of my work. I have led multi centred research investigating the genetics of rhegmatogenous retinal detachments and ectopia lentis. I co discovered the first genetic association for retinal detachments and have provided the definitive genetic analysis for ectopia lentis. For this work, I was awarded a PhD from the University College London Institute of Ophthalmology, and the Syme Medal from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd). I have received further awards from Moorfields Eye Hospital, the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, the RCSEd and the European Ophthalmology Society. I have authored over 40 peer reviewed publications (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=chandra+a+and+eye) and two book chapters. I have raised over £100,000 in grants for academic research from Moorfields Eye Hospital, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Fight for Sight UK.

I continue my research collaborations across the world, and am the research lead for ophthalmology at Southend University Hospital. I peer reviews scientific papers for numerous medical journals and am a section editor for the journal Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology; journal of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.
