This is a minimally invasive treatment and can be carried out under local anaesthetic with immediate correction and rapid recovery.

Why you might need it

You may decide you want this procedure because you feel your ears stick out too much or are too large, or you're not happy with their shape. Whatever the reason, we can help.

We pride ourselves on our clinical excellence, you'll be looked after by an experienced multi-disciplinary care team.

Who will do it?

A cosmetic surgeon’s reputation, qualifications and experience are vitally important, so we only work with consultant grade specialists. These are highly experienced doctors who have completed years of training. All our consultants are on the specialist register of the General Medical Council (GMC), and many are also members of the UK’s leading cosmetic and plastic surgery associations.

Our patients are at the heart of what we do and we want you to be in control of your care. To us, that means you can choose the cosmetic surgeon you want to work with, when you want, and where you want from across our network of 38 hospitals and many clinics across the UK. They’ll be with you every step of the way: from giving advice at your first consultation, through to offering on-going support after your surgery.

All of our cosmetic surgeons are of the highest calibre and benefit from working in our modern, well equipped hospitals. If you don't have someone in mind, we can help you choose the best consultant for you.

Before your treatment

Cosmetic surgery can be a life enhancing decision and we’re here to help you make the right one. Our experienced cosmetic surgeons will guide you through every step of the way.

It’s important to meet with your chosen consultant before treatment so that you are completely comfortable with them and they know what you want to achieve. It’s helpful to bring in some pictures and a friend or family member to your initial meeting to help articulate your thoughts. You should also ask to see some of the surgeon's recent before and after pictures of similar operations they've performed.

This is an important decision and we're here to listen and help you achieve your goals.

If you decide to go ahead with the procedure, we'll give you at least two weeks between consultation and operation date. This is because we want you to be really happy and confident with your decision.

The procedure

earFold is an implant made from a short strip of nitinol metal alloy consisting of two metals, titanium and nickel. Both these metals are widely used in medicine. The implant is a curved, thin strip of metal (similar to the thickness of a human hair) and is plated with 24 carat gold which reduces the visibility of the implant under the skin.

The ears are numbed with a local anaesthetic injection and a small incision is made towards the edge of the ear. The earFoldTM implant has a pre-loaded, disposable introducer. The surgeon will slide this under the skin and once the implant is in the correct position, it is released. This only takes a few seconds. Once the implant has been released, it grips in to the cartilage of the ear and immediately folds it into a pre-determined shape. One or two stiches are used to close the skin incision.

The time of the procedure will depend on the number of implants needed to correct the ear prominence.

You will be able to go home immediately after the procedure and no bandages or dressings are required. You will be given a three-day prescription for antibiotics as a precautionary measure and arrangements will also be made for a follow up review in clinic about three months after treatment.

The implants can be kept permanently in place but if you wish to have them removed then they can be removed after a specified period has elapsed. By this time they should have exerted a permanent moundling effect on the ear cartilage. The length of time required for this effect to occur depends on your age as ear cartilage tends to be stiffer in older patients. Removal of the implant will require local anaesthetic and the previous incision is opened, allowing the implants to be easily removed.

Are there any risks?

As with all surgical procedures there is the possibility of complications, such as infection or visibility of the implant. Each patient is different with different skin. If you have any issues, please feel free to discuss them with your consultant.

How quickly can I return to normal activities?

Most patients can return to work immediately but should expect some bruising and swelling after treatment. This will settle after a few days.

If you have any questions or concerns, we're here to help.
