Professional profile

I trained in Orthopaedics in Edinburgh and spent one year as a Senior Fellow in Adelaide, South Australia, before returning to Edinburgh as a Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon. I was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Newcastle in 1998, and developed my expertise in hip and knee replacement and revision surgery.

I represented the North East on NHS England's Clinical Referencing Group for Specialist Orthopaedics, and on the National Joint Registry for England and Wales. In 2016 I moved to the University Hospitals of North Tees and Hartlepool as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, where I continue to perform hip and knee replacements and revisional surgery.

I am recognised as a leader in hip and knee replacement and revisional surgery in the North East. I have experience teaching and demonstrating indications and surgical techniques both nationally and internationally.

I have performed over 2,000 hip replacements and 2,000 knee replacements. My revision rate for hip and knee replacements at 10 years is below average on the National Joint Registry and my patient satisfaction rate is 98% for hips and 95% for knee replacement, also better than average. I have expertise is managing failed hip and knee replacements and have performed over 500 revision hip replacements and over 200 revision knee replacements.

I have published research papers on techniques and results in revision hip and revision knee replacements and have taught on indications and techniques locally, nationally and internationally.
