Professional profile

I was awarded a PhD in physiology and medicine from the University of London in 1998. I have over 20 years experience, both clinical and academic, related to the physiological investigation of functional (primarily lower) gastrointestinal disorders. I am thedDirector of the long-established GI (Colorectal) Physiology Unit at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. The unit is internationally renowned, and provides a clinical service to more than 1,200 patients per year, which supplies the resources for aligned research. I also provide diagnostic services through the Functional Gut Clinic, based in central London.

I am the author of 115 peer-reviewed publications and 9 book chapters, and have recently edited two journal supplements dedicated to the subject of constipation. My research interests are focused on the pathophysiology and treatment of functional colorectal disorders.
