Your consultations

For your appointments, you’ll meet your consultant in one of our 10 consultation rooms. All of our rooms are accessible, making things easier if you find walking difficult prior to knee replacement.

Our dedicated orthopaedic consultants specialise in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal (bone and muscle) conditions. Here’s what will happen before your treatment:

• If you haven’t been diagnosed yet, your consultant will use our advanced scanning, imaging and diagnostic technologies to look at your knee and help them understand the cause of your pain or mobility problems
• Once you’ve been diagnosed or if you have a referral, your consultant will then discuss treatment options with you
• Before recommending a knee replacement, they may suggest hydrocortisone joint injections or knee arthroscopy first

Your consultations give you an opportunity to ask questions and discuss your expectations, needs and desires. Your consultant will then be able to outline a treatment and care plan that’s tailored to you.

When you come in for your operation, you’ll be with us for three to four days. You’ll stay in one of our large, bright, private en-suite rooms which has a locked space for your belongings and entertainment to keep you occupied as you start your recovery.

If you’ve come with a friend or family member, they’re welcome to wait in our lounge, which has a TV and free hot drinks or water, while you have your operation.

Anaesthetic options

When you’ve had time to settle into your private room, your anaesthetist will administer a general anaesthetic, where you’re completely asleep, or an epidural (spinal anaesthetic) where you’ll be numb from the waist down. If you’re having an epidural, you can also have sedatives to help you relax.

During your operation

The operation should take a couple of hours. Your consultant will make the necessary incisions and remove parts of your knee joint, then fit your artificial joint (called a prosthesis) and close your incisions.

After your operation, you can start your recovery process in one of our 38 en-suite private rooms. You’ll have all the comforts and conveniences you’d expect to find in your own home while you recover with us, including:

• Armchair
• Bedside table
• TV
• WiFi
• Window

You might feel some discomfort after your knee replacement. Our nursing team will provide medication and ensure you have everything you need to recover well.
