Private hip replacement Thames Valley

The damaged hip joint is replaced with a new, artificial one.

At Spire Thames Valley Hospital our consultants can help relieve discomfort and improve your mobility, using trusted and clinically proven hip replacement surgery techniques. Our private hospital is clean and modern, and our high-quality facilities help our treatments run smoothly.

During hip replacement surgery our orthopaedic (bone and muscle) consultants replace damaged parts of the hip with an artificial joint, called a prosthesis. The procedure can help make your everyday activities more comfortable.

Procedures offered for hip replacement at Spire Thames Valley Hospital

At Spire Thames Valley Hospital, our consultants have wide experience in performing hip replacement surgery. If your consultant thinks surgery right for you, they may offer:

  • Minimally invasive hip replacement surgery - this usually means a faster recovery time while still achieving the same outcomes
  • Anterior hip replacement surgery, when incisions are made in the front of the hip, resulting in less pain and faster recovery than with traditional surgery

We also have two laminar flow operating theatres, which regulate air flow to minimise the risk of infection.

Your consultations

For your appointments, you’ll meet your consultant in one of our 10 consultation rooms. All of our rooms are accessible, which makes it easier if you find walking difficult prior to hip replacement.

Our dedicated orthopaedic consultants specialise in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal (bone and muscle) conditions. Here’s what will happen before your treatment:

  • If you haven’t been diagnosed yet, your consultant may recommend our advanced scanning, imaging and diagnostic technologies to look at your hip and help understand the cause of your pain or mobility problems
  • Once you’ve been diagnosed or if you have a referral, your consultant will then discuss treatment options with you
  • Before recommending a hip replacement, they may suggest hydrocortisone joint injections first

Your consultations give you an opportunity to ask questions and discuss your expectations, needs and desires. Your consultant will then be able to outline a treatment and care plan that’s tailored to you.

Hip replacement: your procedure

On the day of your procedure, our ward staff will show you to your room and get you settled in. If you’ve come with a friend or family member, they’re welcome to wait in your room while you have your operation.

Your consultant and surgical team will prepare you for your operation.

Anaesthetic options

When you’ve had time to settle into your private room, your anaesthetist will administer a general anaesthetic, where you’re completely asleep, or an epidural (spinal anaesthetic) where you’ll be numb from the waist down. If you’re having an epidural, you can also have sedatives to help you relax.

During your operation

Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, your surgeon will make one or more incisions in your hip, remove both the socket and the top of your thigh bone and replace them with a new artificial hip joint. A hip replacement surgery usually takes an hour to an hour and a half.

After your hip replacement surgery, you’ll be taken to your room to start recovery. Pain relief can help manage normal discomfort and swelling after surgery.

Your physiotherapist will get you moving as soon as you’re ready and will show you exercises to aid your recovery.
