Patients needing routine care such as knee and hip replacements are meant to be treated in 18 weeks under NHS rules. But the numbers waiting longer than that now top 350,000 - a 163% rise since 2012. Today, there are 3.7 million people in total on the waiting list.
Alarmingly, it’s predicted that the number of patients waiting longer than 18 weeks for surgery is set to double in the next three years. Based on official NHS figures, new analysis suggests the total number waiting for operations will reach almost 5 million in 2020 - an increase of almost 2 million since 2015. And there will be 800,000 patients waiting more than 18 weeks for treatment.
Royal College of Surgeons president Clare Marx puts this situation into reality, "Someone waiting for a gall-stone removal will be in a lot of pain and discomfort. The longer you wait for a hip or knee replacement the less likely you are to have good outcomes. These waits really matter.
Combined with over 80,000 cancellations a year, its no surprise more and more of us are turning to private healthcare to help us get fitter, faster. Yet, at the same time, The Department of Health reveals, “The number of people with private medical insurance is lower now than it was eight years ago.”
Here at Spire Healthcare, we know these operations and treatments can make a huge difference to people's lives. So as private medical insurance declines while waiting lists increase, our “self pay” option is ideal for those who want to get fitter, faster - and at a fixed price.
Paying for your own treatment is a quick and easy way to get immediate access to the healthcare you need. You can see a consultant within 48 hours and many procedures can be booked in as little as 2 weeks. And as we offer a single, fixed price for treatments, there are no surprises. Patients can simply focus on recovery and get back to the things that matter most.
