Professional profile

As Children and Young Peoples Lead it is vital that I lead provision of exemplary planned care for patients aged from birth to 18 years. Lead specialist in all clinical areas providing specialist education and audit. It is also very important to ensure the teams delivery of effective care by providing excellent clinical and managerial leadership. As Lead I develops a working environment and culture that actively improves health, safety, security and safeguards the welfare of children and young persons; this addresses the importance to practice with individual’s health and wellbeing needs at all times. Through tailoring work to individual patients and families I provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information which leads to developing my own knowledge and practice to assist others to continually professionally develop and include the best multi-disciplinary approach.

I have a great interest in Paediatric Urology especially Enuresis- Night time wetting where I have developed a nurse-led enuresis clinic at Spire Thames Valley. Within my role I am able to identify patients’ goals that are appropriate to their needs, taking into account developmental, medical, social, cultural and family circumstance compare current practice against appropriate benchmarks. I develop care plans that are appropriate to the patients that take into consideration the care pathway, risks and their wellbeing. This is all underpinned by evidence based practice alongside being an exemplary role model and advocate to Children and Young People.To ensure I am kept up to date with guidance and guidelines to fulfill my profession it is critical. Agreeing with HM Government (2010), it is vital that I, as a professional understand my role and the responsibilities within my role and my team to care, support and safeguard children and young people and adhere to the duties set out by primary legislation and associated regulations and guidance.

I work well within a multi-disciplinary team, I feel it is paramount to work together to ensure the best possible care for that patient alongside the use of evidence based practice, local polices, protocols and legislation. I apply person centred care to all of my patients; every patient has a plan of care that is tailored to their individual health needs. If I feel the patient’s individual/family needs are not being met I would challenge the initial decision that is made in relation to their care, keeping the patients best interest as the priority, especially if evidence based practice and local policy are not being followed. I am responsible for the welfare and safety of my patients, this links to Working Together to Safeguard Children (2010) as it illustrates how organisations and individuals should work together to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people in accordance with the Children Act 1989 and the Children Act 2004.

Part of my role as Children and Young Lead is to provide appropriate training, supervision and direction for junior and non RSCN staff during specialist interventions or procedures, following organisational, regulatory and other relevant professional guidelines. Enable and validate colleagues in the development of their own competence in using different interventions designed to address children’s health and wellbeing needs following Spire, NMC or other relevant professional guidelines.

I was Women’s Captain of the University of Worcester Rowing Club in my final year at university. I demonstrated excellent organisational skills, great team working and time management skills. Regularly having to organising fourteen hours of training for thirty women including myself. When planning training I had to take into consideration the other women’s timetables and commitments as well as my own course, placements and part time job. Training fourteen hours a week requires a huge amount of dedication, commitment and motivation. As Women’s Captain I was a leader for the others to follow, I was the role model, setting the example of commitment, communication and motivation.
