Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET) is a non-invasive method used to assess the performance of the heart and lungs at rest and during exercise.

Why you might need it

Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET) is a non-invasive method used to assess the performance of the heart and lungs at rest and during exercise.

Who might need a CPET test?

  • Patients experiencing unexplained breathlessness
  • Patients scheduled for major surgery
  • Patients taking part in a testing for the diagnosis of lung disease
  • Patients in rehabilitation following a major illness

How much does it cost?

A fixed price for this treatment may be available on enquiry and following an initial consultation.

The guide price displayed shows what most patients who pay for their own treatment should expect to pay for treatment. The price may vary depending on Consultant, type of anaesthetic, implant or drug used, and may also vary due to your medical history.

Spire St Anthony's Hospital can provide you with a single, fixed price so there are no surprises. Please read Spire Healthcare's terms and conditions for full details of what’s included and excluded in your fixed price when paying for yourself. Finance options are available through our partner Omni Capital Retail Finance Ltd, 10 Norwich Street, London, EC4A 1BD.

Who will do it?

Our patients are at the heart of what we do and we want you to be in control of your care. To us, that means you can choose the consultant you want to see, and when you want. They'll be with you every step of the way.

All of our consultants are of the highest calibre and benefit from working in our modern, well-equipped hospitals.

Our consultants have high standards to meet, often holding specialist NHS posts and delivering expertise in complex sub-specialty surgeries. Many of our consultants have international reputations for their research in their specialised field.

Before your treatment

You will have a formal consultation with a healthcare professional. During this time you will be able to explain your medical history, symptoms and raise any concerns that you might have.

We will also discuss with you whether any further diagnostic tests, such as scans or blood tests, are needed. Any additional costs will be discussed before further tests are carried out.

Preparing for your treatment

We've tried to make your experience with us as easy and relaxed as possible.

For more information on visiting hours, our food, what to pack if you're staying with us, parking and all those other important practicalities, please visit our patient information pages.

Our dedicated team will also give you tailored advice to follow in the run up to your visit.

Before attending for your CPET, please:

  • Do not eat a heavy meal or consume caffeine for 2 hours before
  • Do not take alcohol for 24 hours before
  • Do not participate in vigorous activity 24 hours before
  • Wear loose fit comfortable clothing to exercise in, including trainers or non-slip shoes
  • Do not smoke for at least 8 hours prior
  • Continue normal medication regime

The procedure

During the CPET test the patient will be required to perform exercise on an upright bicycle or on a treadmill whilst wearing a mask.

Each breath will be measured to assess the capacity of the lungs during rest and exercise, and is compared to normative values. The heart will also be recorded through ECG prior to, during and post exercise.

The total appointment time will be for one hour; however the patient will only be required to exercise for approximately 10 minutes.  The test may be maximal or submaximal depending on consultant recommendations.

What information will be analysed?

  • Lung Function: Flow volume loops
  • Oxygen Consumption during exercise  ( Aerobic Capacity)
  • Anaerobic Threshold
  • ECG, Blood Pressure and O₂ Saturation
