Professional profile

I am a Professor of Neurosurgery at St George's since 2013 and my research is in spinal cord injury. I have developed novel treatments for acute and chronic spinal cord injuries such as neuromonitoring from the injury site in the intensive care unit, as well as spinal cord blood flow monitoring in the operating theatre to minimise the risks of surgery. I have also developed a new operation for spinal cord injury termed expansion duroplasty. I am the lead investigator of the ISCoPE trial for spinal cord injury. I have supervised the clinical training of several neurosurgeons in the UK and I have also supervised the research of several PhD students in London.

I treat a wide range of general neurosurgical problems and I have subspecialist interests in spinal and vascular neurosurgery. I receive referrals for complex spinal and vascular problems such as spinal cord tumours, tumours of the spine, brain aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations.

I graduated from the medical schools of the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford and completed my Neurosurgery Training in London (clinical) and San Francisco (research). Between 2002 and 2006 I was a Welcome Trust Clinician Scientist fellow. I have been a consultant neurosurgeon at St George's Hospital since 2006.

I am a member of professional societies and I have been an invited speaker in national and international meetings including the Society of British Neurological Surgeons, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, EuroSpine, the International Spinal Cord Society and others.
