Professional profile

I am a fellowship trained knee and a sport medicine surgeon with extensive experience in knee ligament reconstruction, primary/revision knee arthroplasty, patellofemoral joint instability and multiligament reconstruction. After finishing my type one specialist registrar training in Scotland and knee fellowship in Sydney and Newcastle in 2005, I was appointed as consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon in the QEH NHS Trust in Gateshead and the private Newcastle Nuffield Hospital where I worked for more than ten years. In August 2015, I was appointed as a knee surgeon at the Academic Surgical Firm, South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC).

I have a specialist interest in knee sports injuries, knee arthroplasty and patellar instability.

To date, I have performed more than 10,000 orthopaedic procedures. The main bulk of those procedures are knee arthroplasty, ACL reconstruction, patella stabilisation, knee arthroscopy and trauma. I have performed more than 2,000 knee replacements and nearly 3,000 arthroscopic procedures.

Since 2010, I have dedicated a significant amount of my time to humanitarian work with NGMV medical charity and more recently with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) at their war wounded trauma reconstruction centre in Tripoli/Lebanon. I am also a visiting professor in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences in Northumbria University and a director of OASIR Research group.

In the past eight years I have developed an extensive research interest in patellar instability and tendinopathy. I have published more than 88 scientific papers, book chapters and articles. I have also co-authored two of the best selling postgraduate orthopaedic books in the UK.
