Mr Robin Kanagasabay

Cardiothoracic Surgeon

Specialises in

I have been a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at St George's Hospital since 2002. I trained in medicine at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, with an intercalated BSc in Neurophysiology at Charing Cross Hospital and the Institute of Ophthalmology. Following junior medical posts in London and Guildford I entered general surgical training in London, Midhurst and Chichester. During this time I obtained higher specialist qualifications in both surgery (FRCS) and medicine (MRCP) with a view to a career in cardiothoracic surgery, a speciality where a broad knowledge of both surgical and medical diseases is uniquely important.

I am an experienced Cardiothoracic Surgeon with an interest in all aspects of adult cardiothoracic surgery. I specialise in arterial coronary bypass grafting, valve and aortic surgery and minimally invasive lung surgery. I also undertake complex extended thoracic procedures where both thoracic and cardiac surgical skills are required such as extended intra-pericardial lung resection for cancer.

I was appointed to the South West Thames Cardiothoracic Programme in 1995, rotating between St George's Hospital, The Middlesex Hospital (now the Heart Hospital), and Harefield. During this time I gained experience in a wide range of adult cardiothoracic procedures including coronary artery surgery (both on and off pump), VATS, valve surgery and heart and lung transplantation. At the end of the training programme I spent one year training in advanced arterial grafting and aortic surgery at the Austin and Repatriation Medical Centre, Melbourne, Australia under the guidance of Professor Brian Buxton.

I am the audit lead for cardiac surgery at St George's Hospital and representative to the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons. I am a core member of the lung cancer multidisciplinary team at St Peter's Hospital Chertsey and the Royal Surrey County Hospital Guildford.

When not in the outpatient clinic or operating room I can be found cycling the Surrey hills trying to keep up with my wife and our two ever more energetic teenage daughters, playing the piano and drums and fighting a losing battle with shrubs in the garden!
