Following undergraduate training at the Royal London Hospital and postgraduate training at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, Guy's and Lewisham Hospitals, London, I undertook a research fellowship in children's hearing loss at the University of Washington, Seattle, and a clinical fellowship in paediatric otorhinolaryngology at the Children's Hospital, Sydney, Australia. I was appointed as a Consultant ENT Surgeon to Epsom Hospital in 1991. I was also honorary consultant ENT Surgeon at the Children's Trust, Tadworth.
My interest is general paediatric ENT, including hearing loss, glue ear, nasal allergy and disorders of the tonsils and adenoid.
I perform approximately 300-400 paediatric ENT operations per year and hold two dedicated paediatric outpatient clinics each week.
I was previously a consultant clinical advisor in ENT to the NHS Modernisation Agency and national link for day-case paediatric ENT surgery. In 2007, I was seconded to the Department of Health Ministerial Working Party, 'Delivering Care Closer to Home'. I was chairman of one of the four Guidelines Review Panels at the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). From 2006-2013 I was a professional specialist clinical assessor in ENT for the NHS National Clinical Assessment Service (NCAS). From 2009-2011 I was one of two National Specialist Advisors in paediatric otolaryngology to NCEPOD, a DH specialty advisor for the Atlas of Variation and author for NHS Clinical Information. I was also a member of the DH HRG Expert Working Group. In recognition of my continuing contribution to the NHS, I have been awarded a Level 11, Gold National Clinical Excellence Award.
I am currently assistant editor of the Journal of Laryngology and Otology and member of the Executive Editorial Board of Clinical Otolaryngology. I am a peer reviewer to a number of national and international journals.
