Professional profile

I studied medicine at Cambridge University and the University of London, qualifying as a doctor in 1993. I trained in gastroenterology and general medicine in London and spent 3 years in clinical and academic research at Imperial College London. I have been a consultant gastroenterologist since 2007 working at both Kingston and St George's Hospitals. My areas of particular expertise include diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy although my training and career has given my wide exposure and experience in all aspects of gastroenterology and liver disease.

I specialise in general gastroenterology and liver disease, with specific interests in diagnostic and therapeutic lumenal endoscopy, ERCP (endoscopy for the treatment of jaundice and bile duct stones), GI cancer, reflux and indigestion, jaundice and abnormal liver function tests and altered bowel habit.

To date I have performed over 4,000 gastroscopies, over 3000 colonoscopies and over 800 ERCPs and have attended JAG and ASGE training courses on therapeutic endoscopy. I annually audit my key performance indicators for endoscopy and these are routinely better than national standards (e.g. my colonoscopy completion rate is annually between 97-98%; the national quality standard is over 90% with an 'aspirational' target of 95%). I am proficient at polyp removal, endoscopic dilatation of oesophageal, pyloric, duodenal, colonic and biliary strictures, treattsment of GI bleeding, endoscopic placement of oesophageal, duodenal, colonic and biliary stents and insertion of gastrostomy and naso-jejunal feeding tubes.

I am the Clinical Lead for Endoscopy at Kingston Hospital and have recently been Clinical Director for Gastroenterology and Endoscopy and Clinical Lead for Upper GI Cancer.
