Professor Tahir’s career started as a Medical House Officer, at the teaching hospital in Baghdad for General Medicine, Surgery, gynaecology and military service. In 1979, Professor Tahir was part of ‘The Institute of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine’ in Baghdad and in 1981 moved to the UK and started at the Middlesex hospital, London.
With a few years under his belt in some London based hospital, Professor Tahir moved back to Baghdad and became a Clinical Oncologist at ‘The Institute of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine’ in Baghdad. At the same time, he became a Senior Lecturer at Al-Mustansria University, College of Medicine and was an Associate Professor in Clinical Oncology, at the Saddam Colleges of Medicine in Baghdad.
In January 1994, Professor Tahir’s career took him to Al-Bashir Hospital in Amman, where he became a Consultant in Oncology before taking the step to move back to the UK to further his career. From 1994 through to 1997, Professor Tahir worked in Oncology at St Luke’s & Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford before making the decision to move to Colchester in January 1997 where he stayed until 2004. Professor Tahir has been a Consultant Oncologist (Medical Oncology and Radiotherapy) at the Mid Essex Trust and has worked in Chelmsford from 2004 to date where he has led and supervised the chemotherapy team for 14 years.
Professor Tahir has participated as Principal Investigator in more than 50 clinical trials which have set the basis of modern medical and radiation oncology practice, mostly GI, Gynaecology and Urology Oncology but also lung cancer and melanoma. He is visiting Professor to Anglia Ruskin University Postgraduate Medical Centre and helped the formation of Anglia Ruskin Clinical Trial Unit.
