The Chalybeate Suite is the dedicated oncology unit at Spire Southampton Hospital. It was built in 2010 to cater specifically for oncology patients and the team made the huge change from nursing patients in beds to ‘pods’.
The unit offers a 24/7 service for 365 days of the year to patients admitted directly into the hospital, in addition to the four-day core week for chemotherapy treatments. Additionally, the team offer a 24/7 on-call service to patients.
The team comprises of four contracted members of staff, led by Marianne Wood and Lisa Keen, and has evolved massively over the past five years.
The oncology team achieved an outstanding recommendation in the feedback from the CQC during their intensive inspection of the hospital in October 2014. The outstanding level of practice and quality of care the team deliver to patients was evident to the CQC inspectors. This recommendation demonstrates the very positive patient experience in terms of continuity, and the smooth consistent pathway, in an environment that is private calm and relaxing, often compared to a spa atmosphere.
