Professor Andrew Lotery

Consultant Ophthalmologist

MB Bch, MD, FRCOphth

Specialises in

I perform sutureless cataract surgery using topical anaesthesia and treat retinal diseases with cold (PDT) and hot lasers and pioneering new treatments.

I trained in medicine at Queen's University Belfast and graduated with distinction in 1989. After my general ophthalmology training in Belfast I was awarded an MD for research into the genetics of an inherited form of macular degeneration.

Subsequently, I completed a two year medical retina sub-specialist fellowship at the University of Iowa, USA. I was then recruited to the retinal faculty at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics where I worked for two years prior to being appointed Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Southampton. During my four years in the United States I gained experience in the management of macular degeneration, inherited retinal diseases and diabetic retinopathy.

My research has resulted in the identification of two genes which cause eye disease and the location of a third macular degeneration gene. I have also worked on a gene therapy for eye diseases. My research has been recognised with awards from the Queen's University of Belfast, the University of Iowa and various funding bodies.
