Mr Geoffrey Tsang

Consultant Cardiac Surgeon

MBChB, MD, FRCS (CTh)

Specialises in

I have performed over 5,000 Cardiothoracic Operations in Southampton as primary surgeon since my appointment as Consultant Cardiac Surgeon in 1999. I perform all aspects of adult cardiac surgery. My major interest is in thoracic aortic surgery, aortic and mitral valve repair and replacement. I am also an expert in coronary artery bypass grafting and I am one of two surgeons in Southampton who undertake both open and transcatheter aortic valve replacement surgery (TAVI).

My personal operative results, and those of the Cardiac Unit at UHS, are available for public scrutiny on the website of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland (www.scts.org). My personal operative outcomes, and those of the cardiac unit at UHS, have consistently been significantly better than expected when adjusted for surgical and operative risk. They compare very favourably with other Cardiac Units in the United Kingdom. My interest in surgery to the aortic root, ascending, arch, descending and thoracoabdominal aorta dates back to my training in Birmingham with Professor Bonser.

My experience and results at Spire Southampton Hospital includes performing over 1,000 cardiac procedures at this hospital with a mortality rate less than 0.25% for all cases - despite a varied case mix. The outcomes for the Cardiac Surgical Group at Spire Southampton are especially outstanding considering the surgical and operative risk profiles of patients are equivalent to many much larger Cardiac Units in the United Kingdom. The risk adjusted surgical outcome data for myself and the Cardiac Surgical group are consistently updated on the Spire Southampton website.

I have performed over 700 cardiac procedures at this hospital with a mortality rate less than 0.25% for all cases - despite a varied case mix. The outcomes for the Cardiac Surgical Group at Spire Southampton are especially outstanding considering the surgical and operative risk profiles of patients are equivalent to many much larger Cardiac Units in the United Kingdom.

Until recently I was the Wessex Training Programme Director coordinating cardiothoracic trainees in both Southampton and Oxford. I remain the Chairman of the Specialty Training Committee. I have recently been appointed as a member of the Specialty Advisory Committee in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons. I am an Examiner for the final FRCS (Cardiothoracic) Intercollegiate Examination. In addition I have previously been the Clinical Service Director for cardiothoracic surgery at the University Hospital Southampton.

I graduated MBChB from Birmingham University, 1987. I attained my fellowship at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh 1991. I trained in all aspects of cardiothoracic surgery in rotations in the West Midlands as well as at Newcastle upon Tyne. I undertook my surgical research fellowship under Professor Cliff Shearman resulting in the award of an MD in 1996. I graduated FRCS (cardiothoracic) in 1998 before being appointed a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon in Southampton in 1999. In 2006 I was the Clinical Service Director for Cardiothoracic Surgery. I continued in this post until 2009. I continue as Consultant Cardiac Surgeon for all aspects of adult cardiac surgery.
