Mr Diederik Bulters

Consultant Neurosurgeon and Honorary Professor of Neurosurgery

MBChB, BSc, FRCS (Neurosurgery)

Specialises in

I am a neurosurgeon with specialist expertise in the treatment of vascular disorders of the brain and spine. I lead a large research team investigating ways to improve the surgical and medical treatment of these conditions and have been awarded grants by the European Union, Innovate UK, EPSRC, MRC, NIHR, Wessex Medical Research, Smile for Wessex and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and have published over 50 research studies.

Neurovascular problems include aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, dural AV fistulas, cavernomas, moya moya disease. These represent some of the most technically challenging disorders in the nervous system for microsurgery. Their treatment draws on a wide range of different skill sets, which I also use in the treatment of many related conditions of the brain and spine. Whatever the condition I hope that I can provide a prompt and professional service to get you the best treatment possible.

Trigeminal neuralgia is a condition frequently caused by compression of a nerve by an artery. My technical skills in microsurgery and blood vessels are ideally suited to this type of surgery. Traumatic brain injury has many things in common with brain injury from haemorrhage, which can occur with vascular disorders and is an area in which I am an international expert. I am also the neurosurgical lead for traumatic brain injury in Wessex.

Haemorrhage can also lead to hydrocephalus (accumulation of fluid on the brain) and I therefore have extensive experience in shunt surgery and have one of the larger experiences of recruiting patients to shunt studies in the world. My microsurgical expertise in vascular spinal disorders also helps in in keeping my general spinal surgery practice minimalistic and small.

After completing my medical training at the University of Edinburgh I moved to Southampton for my neurosurgical training. I was then awarded a Royal College of Surgeons fellowship in Neurovascular Surgery in Cambridge where I worked for a further two years as a consultant before returning to Southampton where I now have my practice.
