Specialises in
I am an upper gastro-intestinal surgeon with a specialist interest in gallstone disease, anti-reflux surgery and hernia repairs. I have particular expertise in the management of cancer of the stomach and oesophagus. I perform the vast majority of my operations using laparoscopic techniques ("keyhole surgery"). This usually leads to small scars, less pain and a quicker recovery after surgery.
I studied medicine at Oxford University, where I graduated with honours. I then continued my training as a surgeon in the Royal Navy, in the West Country and in Wessex, seeing active service as a war surgeon off Iraq and in Afghanistan. I completed my specialist training in upper gastrointestinal surgery in London (St Mary's and The Royal Marsden). I now work as a Consultant General and Upper Gastro-Intestinal Surgeon at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth.
I offer personal, quality treatment throughout the patient pathway, and believe that attention to detail is the key to successful surgery.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Stuart Mercer at Spire include:
General surgery
COVID-19 testing or antibody tests are not available as a standalone service at Spire Portsmouth Hospital.
