How operation ‘hat-trick’ has kept Edward on the move

After a ‘hat-trick’ of joint replacement operations with the same surgeon, former Solihull magistrate Edward Kane has given his verdict on Spire Parkway Hospital Orthopaedic Consultant Ved Goswami.
“He’s simply the best,” said 82-year-old Edward. “His skills have given me a new lease of life, not once, not twice but three times! I really couldn’t be more grateful.”
Edward, who spent his working life on the Rover factory assembly line, had his first hip replacement at Spire Parkway Hospital back in 2012 after pain started to affect his active lifestyle.
“It was the first time we had met and Mr Goswami soon put me at ease. The operation was a total success and I was up and about in next to no time,” said Edward, who lives in Castle Bromwich with his wife Kathleen.
“When I developed trouble in my knee I immediately asked my GP to refer me again to Mr Goswami and, as before, the operation went perfectly and my recovery was again very quick.”
So, seven years after their first meeting, Edward found himself again preparing for another joint replacement – this time to his right hip – and was determined that Mr Goswami would carry out the procedure.
“There was no doubt in my mind who I wanted to do the operation and I was delighted to ‘renew our acquaintance’,” said Edward.
Once again all went to plan and three weeks after leaving hospital Edward was mowing the lawn, trimming the hedges and making sure he did his 30 minutes a day stint on his exercise bike.
“He really has kept me on the move and helped me stay fit and active at a time when joint pains could have meant an end to my busy and enjoyable lifestyle.
“In between carrying out three joint replacements for me, Mr Goswami also operated on my wife Katherine who needed surgery on a shoulder injury, so it’s fair to say he’s a real friend of the family,” said Edward.
Mr Goswami described Edward as ‘a perfect patient’ and an example to others when it comes to keeping themselves in shape.
“This shows that whatever your age you can still remain fit and active if you have the right treatment at the right time. Too many people put off joint replacement surgery for far too long. The time to take action is when it begins to affect your quality of life not when you can no longer stand the pain.
“Success rates for both hip and knee replacements are very high so there is no reason why people in their seventies and eighties, even in their nineties, can’t carry on enjoying a full and active life after undergoing such procedures.”

A: It depends on the availability of the consultant you wanted to see, but we pride ourselves on getting you fast access to diagnosis and you can often get a consultation within 24/48 hours. Initial consultation fees vary by consultant, but around £175 is a reasonable guide.
Q: If I need surgery, how quickly could I have it?
A: We have no waiting lists at Spire Parkway, but again, it depends on the availability of the consultant you wanted, but as a guide, and subject to your pre-operation assessment, between one and two weeks.
