Hospital’s five star rating is success on a plate

A food safety watchdog has given Spire Parkway Hospital top marks following an unannounced inspection.

The Food Standards Agency carried out a thorough examination of all kitchen facilities at Spire Parkway Hospital before awarding it Five Stars under the nationally recognised Food Hygiene Rating Scheme.

The scheme, run by local authorities throughout the country, applies to restaurants, pubs, cafes, takeaways, hotels, supermarkets and other food shops as well as hospitals.

Inspectors consider:                      

  • How hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored
  • The condition of the structure of the buildings – the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities
  • How the business manages and records what it does to make sure food is safe

Matt Hooton, Head Chef at Spire Parkway, said: “We are absolutely delighted to once again receive a five star rating – it really does mean a lot to the hospital and particularly to the people who help prepare the food, keep the kitchens clean and deliver meals to the patients.

“We have won several awards over the years but maintaining our Five Star hygiene rating really is the important one as far as we are concerned. We pride ourselves in providing fresh and tasty food prepared on the premises, but most of all we are determined that everything we do adheres to the highest possible hygiene standards”.

One regular customer at the staff restaurant is Hospital Director Tony Yates – himself a former chef – who said: “I have worked in several hospitals around the country and can honestly say I haven’t come across one that maintains the continuous high quality that Matt and his staff manage to achieve.

“They are a credit to Spire Parkway and our regular patient satisfaction figures shows that there work is very much appreciated by everyone who eats here”.
