It was once the exclusive preserve of movie stars and millionaires – but today people from all walks of life are considering cosmetic surgery.
An ever increasing number of people – men as well as women – are deciding that now is the time to have that treatment they have been promising themselves for ages.
At Spire Parkway Mrs CC Kat, one of the UK’s leading plastic surgeons, says that as well as an overall increase in the number of facial procedures carried out, the age of people looking for treatment is also broadening – with both younger and older people are deciding to give themselves a ‘confidence-boosting’ new look. Similarly she has seen a significant increase in the number of men requesting surgery.
Ms Kat, who has been listed by Tatler Magazine as one of UK's top facial plastic surgeons (2014) as well as one of UK's top body contouring plastic surgeons (2017), said: “As facial rejuvenation techniques continue to improve and results are getting better and more natural looking, patients are increasingly happy with their results.”
We asked Mrs Kat to talk us through five of the most popular facial procedures, explaining what they entail and how they have improved over the last ten years:
Full facelift: Our faces can say so much about our personality. A good facelift can have a positive impact on our self-confidence as we, maybe for the first time in years, once again look as young as we feel!
This relatively straightforward operation lifts up the skin, deeper tissues and surrounding muscles aiming to make your face tighter and smoother, giving you a more youthful appearance. The scars are well hidden within the hairline and in front of the ears.
The procedure takes two hours under general anaesthetic and involves a two-night stay in hospital. Most people return to socialising between two to three weeks.
Mini facelifts have gained in popularity over the past five years as people want more subtle results and shorter downtime. This is very often carried out under local anaesthetic as a day case.
Eyelid surgery: The skin around our eyes can often be the first to show signs of ageing becoming puffy and heavy-looking. An eyelid reduction (blepharoplasty) involves removing skin, fat and muscle from the eyelids – including the ‘bags’ thus redefining the eye area and providing a more youthful look. It involves a very fine line scar around the eyelids.
The procedure is usually carried out under local anaesthetic, takes about 90 minutes hours to perform and involves a one-night stay in hospital. Recovery time is usually 2 weeks. This procedure is particularly popular among men as the face is rejuvenated with minimal scarring.
Brow lift surgery: As we age, the muscles beneath the skin lose their elasticity and the skin itself appears to sag - especially around the forehead, eyebrows and upper eyelids. A brow lift aims to smooth out frown lines and wrinkles on your forehead and between your eyes to give you a more youthful, less serious appearance.
A brow lift is usually carried out as a keyhole procedure and involves four very well hidden scars in the scalp. The surgery takes one hour to perform and involves a one-night stay in the hospital. Swelling around the eyelids usually settles over two weeks. This is a very good, permanent alternative to filler injections.
Chin implant: A weak or receding chin can affect the way you see your face as a whole especially in profile. The demand for chin implants has been increasing as techniques and implants have improved. Patients can choose from a variety of shapes and sizes of implant to suit them.
The implants are made of silicone and the procedure is usually carried out under general anaesthetic. The surgery takes about 40 minutes and can be done as a day case. The scars are hidden in your gum and recovery time is short at about one week.
Neck lifts: The neck lift focuses on reducing the loose, sagging skin around the neck and under the jaw line giving a tighter, more youthful look. Many people point to the neck as the part of their face that ‘ages’ them most.
This procedure is very popular especially amongst men as they are keen to achieve a better looking neck but not necessarily the face. Like the facelift, the neck lift is usually carried out under general anaesthetic and takes about two hours to carry out. There is a two-night hospital stay and recovery is about two weeks.
