Specialises in
I am a Consultant Surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and have a specialist interest in colorectal cancer (bowel cancer), proctology (anal fistula, haemorrhoids/piles) and hernia repair.
I went to medical school at St George's Hospital in London and moved to the West Midlands in 2009 to complete my higher education.
My major operative work is surgery for bowel cancer, such as resection for colon or rectal cancers. I have a specialist interest in the treatment of anal fistula's and am the lead for this condition at University Hospitals Birmingham. I have brought in new treatment for anal fistula (VAAFT video assisted anal fistula treatment) and for haemorrhoids (Rafaelo) at my trust. I also have an interest in hernia repair, both laparoscopic (keyhole) and open techniques for a variety of different types of hernia.
I have performed over 750 colonoscopies and 200 major bowel resections for cancer or other bowel conditions (diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease). I have performed in excess of 300 hernia operations, a fifth of these were for recurrent or complex hernias.
Outside of my clinical work, I am an honorary senior research fellow at University of Birmingham. I have a research interest in the immunological basis of colorectal disease and 'big data' projects. I teach medical students and junior doctors and am a recognised trainer by the General Medical Council.
