Professional profile

I have over 20 years' experience as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon. I trained in Manchester and subsequently in Wrightington Hip Unit, Boston USA and the Mayo Clinic USA. I was awarded the Charnley Prize for research into Hip Replacement.

I am one of the most experienced hip and knee replacement surgeons in the UK, having inserted several thousand hip and knee replacements. My PROMS (patient reported outcome measures) and safety record are above average.

I am a recognised specialist in bone tumour surgery, and a former president of the British Orthopaedic Oncology Society. I am a senior examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons in the Orthopaedic Fellowship, the highest exam in Orthopaedic Surgery.

I have performed in excess of 5,000 total hip replacements and over 3,000 total knee replacements. With a similar number of knee arthroscopies both within the private and NHS sector. I am recognised as having a very low complication rate and only advising surgery where it is really necessary.

I am one of the UK’s most experienced joint replacement and tumour surgeons, and a member of the ROH Bone Tumour Service and the author of several book chapters on bone tumours, both primary and secondary.

I am currently Chair of the Medical Devices Advisory Board (MDA), former advisor to NICE and the Parliamentary Ombudsman, former Deputy Medical Director of ROH and a member of the Medico-legal Advisory Board to ROH. I am chair and senior author of the UK national guidelines on the management of metastatic bone disease.

I am a member and former president of the British Orthopaedic Oncology Society. I am an examiner assessor to the Royal College of Surgery in the specialist orthopaedic examination.
