Professional profile

I studied medicine at Downing College, Cambridge, qualifying in 1995. After. completing my basic surgical training at the Royal Free Hospital, London, I undertook a period of research studying primary liver cancer at Kings College Hospital, which led to the award of MD. I undertook my general surgery specialist registrar training in Brighton, Medway and London, and then spent two years in specialist fellowship posts at Kings College Hospital (hepatobiliary and liver transplant surgery) and the Royal London Hospital (hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery). I was appointed as a substantive NHS Consultant in Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham in January 2011. I am interested in education and have published widely on topics such as neuroendocrine and colorectal liver metastases, hepatocellular cancer, surgical training and perioperative care. I am the leading author of the Oxford Specialist Handbook of Liver and Pancreatobiliary Surgery (Oxford University Press).

My clinical interests include diseases of the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts and I have a particular interest in laparoscopic surgery.

Personal Profile

I am a keen sportsman, having represented university at both rugby union and water polo. After nearly thirty consecutive seasons, I still continue to enjoy playing rugby on a regular basis. I am also a keen. swimmer and cyclist. When not working or on the sports field, I enjoy spending time with my family.
