Professional profile

Following initial qualification (1984), I completed vocational training as a General Practitioner in Argyllshire. I then commenced basic surgical training in Aberdeen 1988-1992 followed by specialist training in cardiothoracic surgery in Liverpool, with a short period of secondment to Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester and a period of higher research in Birmingham and at the University of Warwick. I was appointed a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital on 1st August 1999. In addition following on from my experiences as a rural General Practitioner, I have maintained a parallel interest in immediate medical care and trauma. I have provided at scene support for West Midlands Ambulance Service since 1995 and have been a Medical Incident Officer since 2011. I am the immediate Past Chairman of the British Association for Immediate Care.

I provide a general adult thoracic surgical practice focusing on lung cancer and with particular specialist interests in thoracic trauma, pulmonary infection (including MDRTB) and pectus deformities. Treatments include bronchoscopy and stenting, lobectomies, wedge resection of lung, bullectomy and pleurectomy, NUSS Bar and Ravitch procedures, VATS (keyhole) lung and pleural biopsy, drainage of pleural effusion, insertion of indwelling pleural catheters, endoscopic sympathectomy, VATS/open thymectomy, retrosternal thyroidectomy, chest wall resection and reconstruction, fixation of ribs.

I was Clinical Director for Thoracic Surgery (2010-2013) and Respiratory Medicine (2011-2013). I have been Associate Medical Director – Surgery since January 2013 and Interim Associate Medical Director – Solihull from May 2015 to December 2015. I was appointed an Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Warwick in 2005. I am vice-chairman of the NHS England National Clinical Reference Group for Thoracic Surgery. I am a member of the Thoracic Surgery sub-committee of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery of Great Britain and Ireland.

I also have an additional interest in tactical medicine and use of force. I completed the Northampton Police Instructors course on tactical communication, handcuffing, un-armed defensive tactics, knife defence, straight and side-angled baton, incapacitant sprays, safe prisoner restraint and use of the Emergency Response Belt. My dissertation for Fellowship (FIMCRCSEd) was on Immediate Medical Care in Civilian Tactical Environments. I was the Faculty of Prehospital Care (RCSEd) Convenor on the joint Faculty / ACPO Firearms and Tactical Medicine Clinical Advisory Group. Through this interest, I am able to offer opinions on use of force, and injuries sustained during arrest and detention. I have published numerous articles in peer-reviewed professional journals. I have been preparing medico-legal reports (professional negligence, surgical mishaps/accidents and personal injury) for approximately 15 years and have experience in giving evidence in court.
