Professional profile

I qualified in 1982 with an MBBS degree from the University of Singapore and after receiving FRCS degrees form the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh and Glasgow in 1987, I trained in hepatobiliary and liver transplant surgery in Paris, France.

On returning to Singapore in 1992, I was appointed a senior lecturer in the surgery department of the university hospital and was appointed a consultant surgeon in 1993 and associate professor in 1998. In 2004, I was appointed head of the University Department of Surgery, and division of hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery as well as director of liver transplantation, at the National University Hospital in Singapore, positions I held until coming to work in the UK in 2006.

At the Liver Unit, Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, I am a consultant surgeon specialising in complex liver, biliary and pancreas surgery, liver transplantation as well as general surgery such as gallbladder disease and hernia surgery.

At Spire Parkway Hospital I would be happy to see and help patients with problems in these areas.

My other interests are laparoscopic (keyhole) and hernia surgery. My research interests are in clinical surgery, basic transplant science, pancreatitis and teaching methodologies.

Personal Profile

I have had an enjoyable and successful surgical career in Singapore and seeking new challenges, I came to work in the UK. Despite the weather, my family and I have settled in well and enjoy our new lives. Although the work life is demanding at the QE, I have time to indulge my hobbies, including the study of history and astronomy. On weekends I like to visit historical sites and in the evenings I’m often in the back garden with my telescope pointed skywards.
