Professional profile

I believe in aiming beyond simply the treatment of disease to the full restoration of health to give patients back the life they want to lead. I am a Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist based in Manchester with practices at Spire Manchester Hospital and Central Manchester Foundation Trust.

I treat all heart diseases with special interests in heart rhythm problems and sports cardiology. I implant pacemakers and defibrillators, and perform ablations to treat heart rhythm disorders. I also undertake a wide range of non-invasive diagnostic investigations.

I trained in medicine at the University of Oxford, where I won prizes for academic achievement and research. After completing an intercalated degree in Physiology I was awarded a Wellcome Trust scholarship to fund a period of research before commencement of undergraduate clinical training. My postgraduate Medical and Cardiology training was undertaken in Manchester.

I advanced my skills in cardiac ablation and pacing through a clinical fellowship in pacing and electrophysiology at the world-leading cardiology department of the Royal Melbourne Hospital led by Professor Jonathan Kalman. During this time I received intensive training in advanced arrhythmia management and ablation, and performed research into mechanisms of atrial fibrillation. I am listed as a heart rhythm specialist performing ablations at www.heartrhythmspecialists.org/specialists and am one of the highest volume operators in Manchester.

I have a strong research interest in heart rhythm disorders. My PhD, funded by the British Heart Foundation, was awarded in 2009 for work investigating the cause of ‘sick sinus syndrome’ and the development of gene therapy for this disease. This research was awarded by the Heart Rhythm Society Young Investigator Award and the Turnberg Cup.

I have an ongoing research interest in atrial fibrillation, sinus node disease and arrhythmias in athletes. My expertise and innovation was recently recognised with a grant award of over £800,000 from the British Heart Foundation for research to improve ablation strategies for atrial fibrillation. I am widely published and have been invited to speak at meetings across the world on these topics. I am part of the Cardiac Electrophysiology Research Group at the University of Manchester who are world leaders in the science of heart rhythm disorders.
