Professional profile

I qualified from Bart’s in 1982. I did junior jobs in cardiac surgery at Barts and cardiology at the National Heart Hospital, London. I held a research fellowship at Westminster Hospital where I obtained my MD. I then worked at the Royal Brompton Hospital for a short time, before being appointed as senior registrar in cardiology at Wessex Cardiac Centre in Southampton. From that post I went to the University of California, San Francisco to train, and worked on the cardiology faculty from 1993-1995. I was then appointed as consultant cardiologist and electrophysiologist at Manchester Royal Infirmary, where I worked for 22 years until December 2016. I now only undertake private practice in Manchester, but I am an honorary consultant at Central Manchester University Hospitals Trust.

I am an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Manchester. I have been active in research, producing of 80 original peer-reviewed publications, and supervising 2 successful MD awards for cardiology research fellows.

Clinical Interests


Special clinical interests: accurate clinical diagnosis of cardiac arrhythmias and providing appropriate reassurance for patients, management of blackouts, management of cardiac arrhythmias in adults and children, catheter ablation and implantable devices for cardiac care.
