Dr Riyaz Suleman Patel
Consultant Cardiologist
MBBS, MD, MRCP
Specialises in
I have been a consultant cardiologist for 3 years, having spent over a decade developing an international research portfolio. I have worked at top London and US hospitals which has given me a high degree of experience managing all general cardiology conditions, with a recognised expertise in coronary artery disease risk assessment and prevention.
Aside from this I also specialise in advanced cholesterol management, hypertension, chest pain assessment, valvular heart disease, neurological and autonomic mediated cardiovascular diseases and secondary prevention of those with established heart disease.
In my NHS practice I run a very large general cardiology outpatient clinic and provide in-patient care for acutely unwell cardiology patients. Recently I have personally developed and co-lead a large CVD prevention service at the Bart’s Heart Centre, one of the largest cardiac units in Europe. In my imaging role I have European accreditation in advanced echocardiography and US certification as a cardiac CT specialist.
In addition to my clinical work, I am a senior research fellow at UCL and am one of only a handful of British Heart Foundation Clinical Intermediate Fellows in the country. This post was awarded based on my high profile academic and research background and to fund my research into causes of heart disease and its risk factors.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Dr Riyaz Suleman Patel at Spire include:

I spend a large portion of my time in research and lead several large projects designed to better understand the causes of heart disease and its risk factors in order to improve our efforts for preventing heart disease. I am driven by the need to better target and identify those people who may be at risk of sudden death from a heart attack. In particular I focus on the genetics of heart disease and am trying to investigate and help those who have a very strong family history of heart disease. In addition my group is seeks to identify new treatment options for heart disease and have been, for example, involved with developments around the new cholesterol drug class of PCSK9 inhibitors.
I am an associate editor for European Journal of Quality of care and Outcomes. I also review scientific papers regularly for top cardiology journals including Circulation, European Heart Journal and Heart.
I have authored or co-authored 45 scientific papers in highly rated journals. These are mostly on genetic and non-genetic risk factors for heart disease, such as oxidative stress.
