Specialist equipment – shockwave therapy

Advanced treatment for musculoskeletal conditions resistant to conventional treatment

Shockwave can be used to treat specific conditions which have not responded to conventional conservative treatments, such as:

  • Rest
  • Load modification
  • Ice
  • Pain medication
  • Exercises (including eccentric strengthening programs)
  • Physiotherapy
  • The use of orthotics or supports or corticosteroid injection

Shockwave is a non-invasive treatment in which a device is used to pass acoustic shockwaves through the skin to the injured area. This is thought to stimulate healing, although the precise mechanism by which it achieves this is not currently known.

Why you might need it

Examples of conditions that shockwave can be used to treat are:

  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
  • Calcific tendinopathy of the shoulder
  • Greater trochanteric pain syndrome

The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) has guidance for shockwave use on all of these conditions.
