Rapid access injury clinic

Providing a fast, direct route for our patients.

The Rapid Access Injury Clinic led by sport and exercise medicine consultant, Dr Mark Gillett, runs at Spire Perform on Mondays from 5-9pm.

This service is available to anyone who has a musculoskeletal problem i.e. one affecting bone, joint, ligament, tendon, muscle or nerve – from the professional athlete to recreational sports participant, from the office worker to those involved in manual labour.

One of the key aims of the Rapid Access Injury Clinic is to provide a fast, direct route for patients to see our musculoskeletal specialist, in order to establish an accurate diagnosis and provide an effective, evidence-based management plan. This cuts out unnecessary delays which can result in a prolonged absence from a desired activity (sport/hobby) or work.

It may be necessary to have some form of investigation/imaging in order to achieve the correct diagnosis – patients will be informed of this at their initial consultation.

Why you might need it

The service will be particularly relevant in a number of scenarios:

• Athletes/workers with acute injuries who require urgent information on diagnosis / prognosis
• Athletes/workers who are suspected of having injuries that may not respond to conservative management and require further investigations (e.g. MRI / ultrasound scan/bone scan)
• Athletes/workers who have particularly complex injuries that have not responded to physiotherapy
• Athletes who are feeling ill or fatigued as a result of their training

Some common conditions we treat include:

• Acute and chronic (persistent) ankle sprains
• Knee and Shoulder injuries
• Groin pain / persistent groin strains
• Tendinopathies (e.g. of the achilles and patellar tendons, golfer’s and tennis elbow)
• Lower back pain
• Muscle strains (commonly of the quadriceps, hamstring and calf)
