15 March 2016

Hip specialist Callum McBryde (pictured) at Spire Little Aston Hospital is seeing increasing numbers of younger patients with groin pain; as well as performing hip replacements with a surprisingly fast recovery time.

Sports injuries

One of Callum’s youngest patients is 23 year old champion kickboxer Sean Daly from Burntwood, who came out fighting after a hip injury that could have ended his career.

Callum carried out Sean’s hip operation at Spire Little Aston Hospital.

“Sean had a tear in the cartilage in his hip and we agreed that without surgery he was unlikely to get better or carry on kickboxing. Often, sports people receive minor injuries that, if not treated, steadily get worse until it prevents their movement. But my advice is rather than giving up the sport, seek medical help.”

Less than two months after a keyhole surgery operation to repair a torn cartilage in his hip, Sean was back in training. And his comeback has been a dream come true, winning all three of his fights - two of which were world title defences.

Hip replacement surgery

With around 90,000 hip replacements carried out nationally, it’s one of the most common joint replacement procedures and techniques have improved significantly over the years.

Callum, who is one of only a handful of surgeons in the UK to perform a hip replacement using the anterior approach explains: “This approach preserves muscle, reduces pain and time in hospital and speeds up the patient’s recovery in the first six weeks. In many cases the patient is only in hospital for one night and doesn’t have to take the same precautions post operatively as with the traditional hip replacement methods.”

If you have hip pain, appointments are available to see a specialist consultant orthapaedic surgeon within just 24 hours. Why wait to get moving again?  Call 0121 580 7119.
