Professional profile

I practice as a Clinical Musculoskeletal Radiologist at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, using all imaging modalities in the investigation of musculoskeletal disorders. I use MRI and Ultrasound as specialist diagnostic tools in all manners of Rheumatologic and Orthopaedic disorders with Seronegative Spondyloarthropathy (SpA) MR imaging and ultrasound intervention paramount in my practise. I perform spine imaging and minimally invasive augmentation such as Vertebroplasty and Radiofrequency Kyphoplasty at Spire Hospital Leicester, a service I set up in the NHS in Leicester in 2006. All patients are pre-assessed with one-to-one Consultations and followed up with standardised patient outcome measures. My research interests are on the maximising the utility of MRI in the diagnosis and treatment follow up of SpA. I have presented at the EULAR Conference in Madrid 2013 on the Two Year follow up of Standardised MRI protocols in the management of SpA. The project highlighted the lack of awareness of SpA reporting amongst non-specialist UK radiologists. The protocols developed in conjunction with the University of Alberta, allow quick and accurate imaging using MRI without an added time or cost burden to the NHS due to 'intelligent booking' and maximising imaging protocols. I have lectured on Hands on MRI International workshops for Rheumatologists and Radiologists in London and other parts of the world, promoting the use of MRI in the early diagnosis of SpA. The condition and its early recognition has become a lifelong project for me as the lack of knowledge in the UK on the advances in the field due to imaging and treatment, is a void I wish to fill. Having been awarded a competitive Musculoskeletal Radiology Fellowship at the University of Alberta in Canada, I returned to be appointed a Consultant in Musculoskeletal and Trauma Radiology at the Leicester Royal Infirmary in 2005. The skills learnt in Canada of Vertebroplasty and LASER ablation of Osteoid osteomas enabled me to set up these services in the NHS and at Spire Leicester Hospital. Soft tissue and bone tumour diagnostic imaging and biopsy was part of my training whilst at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in London. I was awarded a Masters in Sports & Exercise Medicine from the University of Nottingham in 2008 and have since been invited to teach on the course as a visiting Lecturer. Due to my research and teaching interest, I have been awarded an Honorary Lectureship by the University of Leicester. I provide a highly specialised Musculoskeletal Diagnostic Service using X-ray, MRI and Ultrasound in Spine disorders, Fractures, Cancer imaging, Hip, Knee, Shoulder and Groin disorders. I work closely with the Orthopaedic and Groin Specialist surgeons to provide an image guided injection service using Ultrasound and X-ray for both diagnosis and transient therapy.

Personal Profile

My family and the guitar are my hobbies in that order; with two young children who succeed in making whatever spare time I have, both exhausting and thoroughly enjoyable and a long-suffering wife who makes all the above possible. She endures my aspirations at being a Rock God (probably with selective hearing!).
