I am a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising exclusively in soft tissue surgery of the knee and ankle. The majority of my work is carried out arthroscopically (keyhole).
I was a medical student in Birmingham and a house officer in Worcester and Coventry. Following this, I spent two years travelling around the world which included working in general practice in Australia for six months. After deciding to focus on surgery, I gained experience around the country and chose to specialise in orthopaedics whilst a SHO to Mr Bernard Cashman in Bedford.
I obtained my Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons through exams both in London and Edinburgh whilst on a pre-fellowship rotation in Sheffield. After spending a year as an Arthritis and Rheumatism Council research fellow, doing research into the measurement of knee laxity, I was appointed to the senior registrar rotation in Leeds/Bradford. After obtaining the FRCSEd Orth and getting on the specialist register, I spent six months as a fellow to Merv Cross and Leo Pinczewski in Sydney, Australia, learning innovative techniques of arthroscopic surgery of the knee and ankle.
On return to the UK and appointment as a consultant at Bradford Teaching Hospitals Trust in 1992, I rapidly developed my specialist interest. I was the first surgeon in Yorkshire to be performing arthroscopic autograft ACL reconstruction and was a pioneer of complex reconstruction, opening wedge osteotomy and ankle arthroscopy. I was a founder member of the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma Association and subsequently was its first academic secretary and then president for four years from 2004 to 2008. I have been chairman of the Yorkshire branch of the British Association of Sports and Exercise Medicine and have been an examiner for the Faculty of Sports & Exercise Medicine (UK). I have been extensively involved in training the future generations of knee specialists both through a fellowship at the BRI and lecturing to trainees and consultants around the country. I was an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons orthopaedic exit exam for five years.
Anterior cruciate reconstruction, posterior cruciate reconstruction, lateral and posterolateral reconstruction, medial reconstruction, combinations of these and osteotomy form the mainstay of my work with the addition of less major knee and ankle problems (arthroscopy) such as meniscal (“cartilage”) injury, articular cartilage injury (microfracture technique), and impingement.
Patients are referred from around the country with both straightforward sports injuries and more complex and difficult problems. I am a national and international speaker on knee and ankle injuries and reconstruction. I have published widely in peer reviewed journals on these subjects. I peer review papers for the Bone & Joint Journal, The Knee and The American Journal of Sports Medicine. I am one of a team of five who have produced “Best Practice Guidelines for ACL Reconstruction” published by the British Orthopaedic Association. I was chairman of the committee responsible for setting up the National Ligament Registry. I am currently on the British Association of the Knee working party producing recommendations on meniscal surgery.
Since 1992, I have gained enormous experience in treating professional sportsmen/women and currently treat players from all levels of the football league and rugby league from all over the country including Premiership football and Superleague rugby league, including 10 years on both the FA and Superleague rugby medical committees.
