Mr Simon Kolb

Consultant Ophthalmologist, Cataract and Vitreoretinal Surgeon

Specialises in

I am a Consultant Ophthalmologist and specialise in vitreous, retinal and cataract surgery. I have performed over a thousand vitrectomies and many thousands of cataract operations as a Consultant Ophthalmologist. My surgical outcomes such as macular hole closure, visual acuity and refraction after cataract surgery, or posterior capsular rupture rate meet or exceed the published standards.

I specialise in cataract and vitreoretinal surgery. I also manage medical retinal conditions such as age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusions including injections and laser treatments. My advanced surgical training in complex vitreoretinal conditions has given me the expertise to deal with a wide range of conditions. I use proven techniques and state of the art surgical equipment to treat retinal detachments, vitreomacular traction, epiretinal membrane, macular hole, floaters and other conditions affecting the back of the eye. With my vitreoretinal surgical expertise I am able to treat all types of cataract with or without complexity and insert special secondary lenses when normal intraocular lenses are not suitable.

I graduated from Newcastle University before obtaining a national training number in Ophthalmology. I have gained a wealth of experience working at different hospitals across the United Kingdom and New Zealand. I gained advanced sub specialty training in vitreoretinal surgery at Europe's largest teaching hospital, St James University Teaching Hospital in Leeds.

I now work at St James University Hospital as a Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Leeds. I am passionate about the continued development of training new surgeons. I am the Royal College tutor at St James', looking after the education and support of new ophthalmic trainees.
