Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Roger Hackney at Spire include:
I trained in orthopaedics in the Royal Air Force and the National Health Service with higher training posts in the Royal London Hospital and Nottingham, where I was shoulder fellow to Professor Wallace. As a consultant I served a further 5 years in the RAF at Halton and RN Haslar hospitals. I had experience of military surgery in Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Kosovo. On leaving the RAF I was appointed to the Leeds Teaching Hospitals as an upper limb surgeon in 1999. My subspecialty is in upper limb surgery and sports trauma.
I developed my upper limb subspecialty and research interests and in particular arthroscopic surgery and rotator cuff disease, together with joint replacement. I undertake most surgical procedures arthroscopically. I was an early researcher into the causes of groin pain in sports and continue that interest. As an ex international runner I maintain an interest in running and overuse injuries.
My weekly timetable includes one private operating list a week plus some weekends and three in the NHS. This translates to nearly 600 procedures a year.
I am a consultant to XIROS/Neoligaments and I am a member of the Leeds Musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit.
My background is as a fellowship trained upper limb surgeon and as sports trauma surgeon. I have lectured and written widely on shoulder instability and rotator cuff disease. In particular I have developed a special interest in the management of large and massive tears of the rotator cuff. I have developed a patch used to augment these tears which are a particular challenge when striving to return a patient to normal shoulder function. I have been conducting a trial into use of the patch, results are extremely encouraging. I have been managing groin pain in sportsmen and women for nearly 30 years. I wrote one of the original papers on this topic in 1993 and coined the term sports hernia. I have lectured and taught in this field across 5 continents.

I am an ex-Olympic runner and competed in the 1980, 1984 and 1988 games. I won a Commonwealth silver medal in the 3000m Steeplechase in 1986.
My athletic career led to a professional interest in sports medicine. I was the first orthopaedic surgeon in the UK to gain a diploma in sports medicine. I helped develop UK sports medicine with a variety of roles in the British Association of Sports and Exercise medicine and the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma Association.
I continue to exercise most days cycling, running and in the gym. My wife Heidi is a consultant anaesthetist who specialises in regional anaesthesia, so some patients have both Mr and Dr Hackney caring for them during surgery.
I have 3 adult girls, two of whom have gone in to medicine, one who works for Sky Sports. I have a 5 year old son who loves running, riding his bike and keeping Daddy busy. I enjoy gardening, growing flowers fruit and vegetables, natural history and the countryside.Back to top
