Professional profile

I work as a consultant thoracic surgeon and senior honorary lecturer at the department of thoracic surgery, St James's University Hospital, in Leeds, UK. I am the former vice-director of the division of thoracic surgery and head of section of minimally invasive thoracic surgery at Ospedali Riuniti Ancona, Italy, where I worked as staff surgeon for more than 14 years. I have worked at several USA centers (Duke University, UCSD, Washington University St. Louis) and in 2010 spent 6 months working at the division of general thoracic surgery, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota.

I am one of the European pioneers of the uniportal VATS technique for operations on the lung and medistinum performed with a single incision of 2 cm. In 2007 I started the programme of videothoracoscopic lobectomies for lung cancer in Italy. This type of procedure allows for a reduction in hospital stay and a faster recovery from operation. I am a member of the minimally invasive thoracic surgery interest group of the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS).

I am also author of more than 150 articles in high profile scientific journals. I received many prestigious scientific awards such as 2 Brompton Prizes, for the best oral presentation at the European Conference of General Thoracic Surgery, and 1 ESTS Young Investigator Award.
