We're approved by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) to provide visa medical and radiological (X-ray) examinations for people who plan to live in Canada, or who will visit temporarily and meet certain criteria. We can perform visa medicals, X-rays and blood tests at the same appointment.

Why you might need it

You will need to have a medical examination if you're planning to move to Canada permanently. You may also need an exam if you're a temporary visitor, student or worker and meet certain criteria. These include working in Canada in a job in which public health must be protected, having lived in certain countries or territories for specified time periods, or applying for a Parent and Grandparent super visa.

Your usual doctor may be approved to do the exam. Instead you will need to choose someone from CIC's list of approved physicians. We have approved panel doctors at selected Spire hospitals.

Spire Hartswood Hospital in Brentwood, Essex offers a Canadian medical visa service. We are a designated eMedical Centre, which enables us to process your medical application quickly and securely online, improving the turn-around time of your visa application.

  • A blood test.
  • A urine sample.
  • A smear test, if you're a women over the age of 35 and are unable to provide results of a smear test undertaken in the past five years.
  • A rectal examination, if you're a man over the age of 50.
